TheEmergencyRoom (a necessary space) is an artistic entity which was created by Olwen Fouéré in 2009 for projects ‘in need of immediate attention’ in order to provide a virtual holding space for the development of art-based ideas, relationships and performance contexts.

The development phase is followed by a partnership with an established production company for the full creation and production of the work.

The first project to be developed by TheEmergencyRoom was Fouéré’s translation of the French play Sodome ma douce by Laurent Gaudé, which received its world premiere as Sodome,my love in the Project Arts Centre, Dublin, in February 2010.
Performed by Fouéré, directed by Lynne Parker and produced in association with Rough Magic, Sodome,my love was nominated for four Irish Times Theatre Awards and received the awards for Best Sound Design and Best Actress.
Sodome, my love toured to the prestigious Ohrid Festival in Macedonia in July 2010. It was performed outdoors against the walls of the ancient site of St Sophia.

The next project, riverrun, is Fouéré’s adaptation and performance of the voice of the river ‘Life’ in James Joyce’s Finnegans Wake.
Work on the adaptation has been ongoing since 2011, including initial support from Michael Mushalla of Double M Arts and Events, NY; Leanne Donnolley of APA and creative producer Colm O'Callaghan. Performed readings of the work-in-progress took place in Dublin (June 2011, Joyce Season by Rough Magic ), in Paris ( at the Centre Culturel Irlandais, Feb 2013), in Lyon and NUI Galway (Art and Geography conferences).

Independent producer Jen Coppinger joined the project in February 2012 and sound designer/composer Alma Kelliher joined in August 2012.

Other artists who have contributed to the development of the work include composer Mikel Rouse and artists Monica Frawley, Paul Keogan, Tom Creed, Annie Ryan, Sarah-Jane Scaife and Megan Kennedy.
Composer Susan Stenger joined as music consultant in March 2013.

Support-in-kind during development and production has been generously provided by Rough Magic.

In November 2012, riverrun received an Arts Council Project Award enabling production of the work in collaboration with producing partners. The production team now also includes lighting designer Stephen Dodd, company manager Kate Ferris, production manager Rob Furey and sound engineer Benny Lynch.

Co-director Kellie Hughes joined in March 2013.

The world premiere of riverrun will take place at the Galway Arts Festival 2013 on 18th July.

Other projects from TheEmergencyRoom include the 30 minute film by Olwen Fouéré and Kevin Abosch "Cassandra: fragments of a playscript" written by Anne Enright, featuring Alice Maher and Olwen Fouéré. The film was first shown at IMMA Earlsfort terrace in February 2013 and is being scheduled for further exhibition and cinema distribution.
